Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) is breaking new ground in education by pioneering the teaching of science in Igbo language, affirming its commitment to enhancing indigenous Igbo science and technology.

In a recent announcement, Vice Chancellor Prof. Charles Esimone revealed that UNIZIK is collaborating with the Odinala Cultural Heritage Foundation (OCHIE), an Igbo language and culture promotion group, to develop a curriculum for teaching science in Igbo.

Prof. Esimone emphasized UNIZIK's capacity to achieve this ambitious project, highlighting the presence of erudite scholars who will craft a suitable curriculum. He assured that the initiative will extend beyond UNIZIK to primary and secondary schools, as well as other higher institutions.

The introduction of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in Igbo language, according to Prof. Esimone, comes at a crucial time when the Igbo community needs to assert the importance of its language in national development.

Citing examples from around the world, Prof. Esimone argued that scientific and technological advancement is closely tied to instruction in indigenous languages. He stressed the significance of preserving the ancient and powerful Igbo language, suggesting that integrating STEM into the educational curriculum will enhance intellectual capabilities.

Expressing pride in UNIZIK's partnership with OCHIE, Prof. Esimone pledged full support for the STEM Project, citing the university's history of adopting Igbo language as a general study course. He emphasized the need to safeguard Igbo culture from erosion.

The executive director of OCHIE echoed these sentiments, expressing optimism that the project will not only advance Igbo science and technology but also promote cultural values and language.

To facilitate the implementation of the STEM project, various sub-committees, including the curriculum development committee led by Prof. Lilian Akudolu, will be inaugurated at UNIZIK. This groundbreaking initiative marks a significant step towards preserving Igbo culture while embracing modern education techniques.
