Professor Jonah Onuoha, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has called on Nigerians to support the proposal for a part-time legislature in the country.

In an interview with Newsmen on Monday in Nsukka, Prof. Onuoha expressed strong support for the recent proposal by Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents the Abia North Senatorial District. Sen. Kalu has advocated for an amendment to the Nigerian Constitution to establish a part-time legislature as a means to reduce the cost of governance.
Prof. Onuoha described the proposal as a significant and positive development that could lead to substantial savings in government expenditures while fostering more effective legislative processes. He praised Kalu’s proposal as a demonstration of patriotism and genuine concern for the nation’s welfare.

“Kalu’s willingness to forgo personal financial benefits in favor of a more cost-effective legislative system reflects his dedication to the country,” Prof. Onuoha stated. “This proposal is in line with practices observed in many Western countries, where part-time legislatures contribute to lower governance costs and less election-related violence and rigging.”
