In response to the heartfelt appeal made by the Abia State chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD), the state government has announced its commitment to establishing a specialized school for the deaf and enhancing facilities for the School of the Blind in Afara Umuahia.

During the state's first Disability Day Interactive Session held in Umuahia, Wisdom Okechukwu Kalu, the chairman of JONAPWD, passionately advocated for the establishment of educational institutions tailored to the needs of individuals with disabilities. The event saw the participation of various stakeholders, including Governor Alex Otti, who affirmed the administration's dedication to inclusivity and welfare for persons with disabilities.

Governor Otti, represented by his deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu, reiterated the administration's stance against discrimination and pledged support for initiatives promoting the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. He acknowledged the significant contributions of PWDs to the state, particularly in sports, where they have garnered recognition by breaking world records.
