Emmanuel Alayande University Celebrates International Literacy Day, Advocates for Literacy in Multilingual Contexts

The Department of Adult and Continuing Education at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo, joined the global community today in celebrating International Literacy Day under the theme, "Promoting Literacy as a Foundation for Mutual Understanding and Peace in Multilingual Contexts." The event drew scholars and dignitaries from within and outside the University.

The keynote lecture was delivered by Professor Kester Osegha Ojokheta from the Department of Adult Education, University of Ibadan. The event was chaired by Alh. Chief Dr. A. A. Adeniran, CEO of Gasma Veterinary and Agric Consult, while Alh. Omokunmi Mustapha served as the Father of the Day.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olanrewaju Olaniyan, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Olatunde Salawu, praised the Department of Adult and Continuing Education, led by Dr. Abiodun Idowu Gbenro, for organizing the event, noting that it aligns with the University’s commitment to advancing adult literacy. The Vice-Chancellor also commended the Dean of the Faculty of Specialised and Professional Education, Professor Esther Oduolowu, for her unwavering support in making the programme a success.

Both Professor Oduolowu and Dr. Gbenro expressed gratitude to the University’s leadership for approving the event and to all the dignitaries in attendance, including the University’s top management team.

The event underscored the critical role of literacy in fostering mutual understanding and peace, particularly in multilingual settings, and reinforced the University's commitment to advancing adult education in Nigeria.
