 In a significant move to prevent the extinction of indigenous languages, scholars from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) have launched the DIGICULTURE project. This artificial intelligence technology is designed to identify, preserve, and promote the languages and cultural heritage of the Remo, Ijebu, Yewa, and Ẹgba (RIYE) communities in Ogun State.

At the project kickoff ceremony, Ogun State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Sesan Fagbayi, represented by the Director of Allied Matters, Mr. Michael Ogunbiyi, announced the state’s readiness to partner with FUNAAB on the DIGICULTURE initiative. He highlighted the potential of this innovation to globally promote the state’s indigenous cultures and languages, thereby enhancing the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). Fagbayi also mentioned plans to present DIGICULTURE to the Council of Ogun State Obas and advised expanding its reach nationwide. He congratulated FUNAAB Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, and appreciated the support from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

In his address, Vice-Chancellor Kehinde, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Kola Adebayo, praised Ogun State’s multicultural harmony. He emphasized that DIGICULTURE would help the people of Ogun State better understand their origins, languages, and cultures. He called on traditional rulers and the Ogun State Government to support the initiative and urged the project team to make DIGICULTURE a global project.

Project Leader Prof. Olusegun Folorunso underscored the importance of bridging theoretical knowledge with practical application. He noted that the DIGICULTURE project was developed to address societal issues, particularly the preservation of cultural heritage. Prof. Folorunso, a Computer Scientist, explained that DIGICULTURE aims to revive fading cultures and languages in Ogun State, thereby boosting the state’s tourism.

Dr. Tope Olaifa, a member of the Project Team, highlighted the collaborative effort between the Humanities and Computer Science Departments. She urged the government and individuals to promote and protect their culture, warning against the extinction of customs. Prof. Mutiu Busari, Director of the Directorate of Research, Innovations, and Partnerships (DRIP), congratulated Prof. Folorunso and his team for securing the grant for the project. He acknowledged TETFund’s recognition of FUNAAB’s effective use of research funds.

The event also featured cultural displays by the University’s Theatre Troupe, underscoring the importance of preserving and celebrating culture and indigenous languages.
