The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Professor Adenike Oladiji, has charged newly admitted students to uphold the University’s long-standing tradition of excellence, integrity and innovation throughout their academic journey.

Professor Oladiji gave the charge at the opening of the orientation programme for fresh students of the 2025/2026 academic session on Monday, December 1, 2025. She described the new students as ambassadors of FUTA and urged them to ensure their conduct within and outside the campus reflects the image and values of the institution.
“From today, you must begin to see yourselves as ambassadors of FUTA wherever you go. Your conduct, within and outside the campus, reflects the image of this great university. FUTA is known for academic excellence and discipline, and we will not condone any act capable of tarnishing that image,” she stated.
The Vice-Chancellor warned against actions that could prematurely end students’ academic careers, noting that decisions taken at this stage of life have lasting consequences. She emphasized the University’s zero tolerance for cultism, indecent dressing, drug abuse and examination malpractice, stressing that impersonation attracts expulsion without appeal, while other offences would attract appropriate sanctions.
She also cautioned students against the improper use of social media and advised them to seek help from the Students Affairs Division whenever they are in distress. Professor Oladiji further encouraged them to choose friends who would add value to their lives and assured them of the commitment of the University management to providing essential municipal services, ICT infrastructure, scholarship opportunities and recreational facilities to enhance learning and research.

In his remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor David Oke, urged the students to embrace discipline, dedication and hard work as keys to academic success. He stressed that FUTA awards certificates based on both academic excellence and character, adding that good conduct is a fundamental requirement for graduation.
“You must not be found wanting in conduct. Your behaviour must conform to the University’s rules and regulations to earn a FUTA degree. Build godly character as you build your knowledge,” he advised.
Professor Oke further encouraged the students to make use of the Student Affairs office for emotional, social and academic support, assuring them that the Division is committed to providing a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for all students.

Goodwill messages were later delivered by Deans of the various Schools, while the University Drama Group from the School of Performing Arts staged a drama presentation titled “Choices” as part of the orientation programme.
