UI Vice Chancellor Encourages Student Leaders to Balance Unionism with Academic Excellence

In a bid to instill values of responsibility and academic excellence in student leaders, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Prof. Kayode Adebowale, has urged student leaders to balance their union activities with academic pursuits during a retreat organized for them.

The retreat, attended by members of the newly-elected Student Union Executive Committee, Students Representative Council, faculty leaders, and residence hall leaders, was held with the aim of equipping student leaders with essential skills for effective leadership while emphasizing the importance of academic commitment.
Representing the Vice Chancellor at the event, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Aderonke M. Baiyeroju, stressed the significance of maintaining a balance between unionism and academic excellence. She emphasized that leadership comes with great responsibility and advised student representatives to demonstrate maturity and purpose in their roles.

During the retreat, six paper presentations were delivered, covering topics ranging from conflict dynamics and financial management to effective communication and university regulations. Notable presentations included "Conflict Dynamics and Student Unionism" by Prof. Ayo Hammed, "Financial Probity and Management of Students’ Funds" by the University's Bursar, A. Popoola, and "Qualities and Skills for Effective Student Leadership" by former UI Students Union President, Mr. Oluwasegun Akeju.
Furthermore, Prof. Baiyeroju emphasized the importance of dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution, urging student leaders to prioritize consultation over confrontation. She encouraged them to bring matters to the table for amicable resolution, fostering an environment of cooperation and mutual understanding.
In light of the retreat's objectives, it was announced that the swearing-in ceremony for the newly-elected Student Union officers is slated for May 13, 2024. This event underscores UI's commitment to nurturing responsible and well-rounded student leaders who prioritize academic excellence alongside their union responsibilities.
