YUMSUK Conducts Advanced Training Program for Drivers
In a continued effort to promote safety standards and improve road efficiency, the Vice Chancellor of Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, has initiated another comprehensive training program for the university’s drivers.
This marks the second driver-focused workshop organized in 2024, reflecting the university’s dedication to equipping its staff with essential driving skills. The recent workshop, held on October 19th and 20th, 2024, at the university’s main campus, brought together another set of drivers to receive training in advanced driving techniques.
The two-day public enlightenment workshop, led by ACC Sharif Hassan Tahir (Rtd.) of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), centered on the concept of the "more than" driving technique. This innovative approach provides drivers with advanced driving skills that go beyond traditional methods, aimed at enhancing their proficiency and preparing them for the challenges of modern road environments.
In his presentation, Mal Aminu Lawal, a key facilitator, highlighted the importance of defensive driving as a fundamental skill. He emphasized the necessity of remaining vigilant and proactive, enabling drivers to anticipate and respond to potential hazards. "Defensive driving empowers drivers to mitigate risks and prevent accidents, even under challenging conditions," Lawal remarked.
Emergency maneuvers were another focus of the workshop. Drivers were trained to handle unexpected situations, such as sudden braking or the appearance of obstacles, with precision and confidence. "Swift and decisive action can make all the difference in averting accidents and safeguarding lives," Lawal affirmed.
Tahir Hassan Shariff elaborated on the significance of vehicle maintenance in ensuring safe driving. He stressed the importance of drivers being knowledgeable about basic maintenance tasks, such as checking tire pressure and fluid levels, to minimize the risk of mechanical failures. This proactive approach to vehicle care contributes to the longevity and safe operation of the university's fleet.
The workshop also explored hazard perception, teaching drivers how to promptly identify and respond to potential dangers on the road. This skill is crucial in navigating safely amidst various road users and conditions, ensuring drivers remain observant and alert at all times.
The Vice Chancellor’s initiative in organizing this program shows Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano's commitment to continuous improvement and professionalism among its staff. By incorporating a diverse set of competencies, including advanced driving techniques, defensive driving, emergency responses, and eco-driving, the university aims to create a culture of safety and responsibility.
As a result, drivers trained under this program are better equipped to navigate complex road environments, contributing to safer roads for both the university community and the public. Through such initiatives, the university continues to set a high standard for road safety and operational efficiency.
