AFYMP Trains LAUTECH Students on Reporting for Impact

The Africa Foundation for Young Media Professionals (AFYMP), in collaboration with the Union of Campus Journalists, LAUTECH, organized a training session on 'Reporting For Impact' at Ghana House, LAUTECH. The event, held on November 16, 2023, saw the participation of 38 individuals.

The distinguished guests at the event included Yinka Olaito, AFYMP Executive Director, Flourish Oladipupo, AFYMP Head of Finance and Administration, Busola Oladunjoye, AFYMP Programme/M&E Officer, and Damilola Fajinmi, a broadcast Journalist.

Yinka Olaito opened the event by highlighting the essence of journalism, emphasizing the need for a burning desire, determination, and continuous learning for success in journalism. He stressed the role of journalism in informing and ensuring accountability.

Damilola Fajinmi, a broadcast journalist, discussed the significant role of indigenous languages in news reporting, particularly in the context of health. She emphasized the effective use of language for inclusion, sensitivity, accuracy, relativity, and clarity. Fajinmi encouraged participants not to forget the ethics of journalism and reminded them of the importance of the fundamental journalistic questions: what, why, when, where, who, and how.

Yinka Olaitan, in the final session, elaborated on the four stages for reporting for impact: understanding the importance, adhering to ethics, knowing how to tell the story, and understanding the relevant laws.

Adeyinka Glory, a 200L Anatomy student, expressed how the event helped her realize that location is not a barrier in journalism. She highlighted the importance of confidence, consistency, and information.

Ajayi Ayomide, another participant, shared that the program benefited him by making him recognize the impact of creative use of indigenous languages in journalism.
