Chad Basin Junior Day Secondary School Emerges Winner of UNICEF Spelling Bee Competition
At the grand finale held at the El Kanemi Hall of the University of Maiduguri, Chad Basin Junior Day Secondary School secured first place with 12 points, earning a cash prize of N350,000. Lamisula Junior Day Secondary School claimed the second position with 9 points and a cash prize of N180,000, while Kaleri Junior Day Secondary School secured third place with 8 points and a cash prize of N120,000.
In a remarkable display of academic prowess, Chad Basin Junior Day Secondary School in Maiduguri clinched victory in the 2024 Spelling Bee and Maths Quiz Competition organized by the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with Education Cannot Wait, a humanitarian agency.
The competition, held in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, saw 43 Junior Day Secondary Schools vying for the top spot. Ultimately, Chad Basin Junior Day Secondary School, alongside Lamisula Junior Day Secondary School and Kaleri Junior Day Secondary School, emerged victorious in the final phase of the competition.

Speaking at the event, UNICEF Chief of Field Office in Maiduguri, Phuong Nguyen, emphasized the importance of increased budgetary allocation to the educational sector in the North East region. Nguyen highlighted the significant challenges facing education in the area, including a high percentage of out-of-school children and a shortage of qualified teachers.

Education experts and policymakers in Borno State echoed similar sentiments, advocating for more funding for education to address existing gaps in the sector. Alhaji Inuwa Kubo, a former Commissioner of Education in Borno State, emphasized the need for community partnership and the reorientation of teachers and parents to ensure quality education delivery.
UNICEF Education Officer, Tina Charles, emphasized the necessity of increased financing for education, citing a decline in budget allocation for education since 2015. Charles stressed the importance of collaborative efforts between governments, donors, and partners to improve education standards for children affected by conflict.
