At the University of Ibadan’s 75th anniversary lecture series, Mrs. Esther Didi Walson-Jack, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HoCSF), highlighted the critical role of collaboration among the civil service, political leaders, and academia in fostering sustainable governance.

At the University of Ibadan’s 75th anniversary lecture series, Mrs. Esther Didi Walson-Jack, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HoCSF), highlighted the critical role of collaboration among the civil service, political leaders, and academia in fostering sustainable governance. Speaking on her behalf, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, Head of Service of Oyo State, delivered the lecture titled “Governance in Partnership: The Essential Collaboration between Civil Service, Political Leadership, and Academia.”

Walson-Jack noted that each sector contributes uniquely to the governance ecosystem: political leaders set national objectives, civil servants execute these goals with technical expertise, and academia provides innovative, research-driven solutions. She emphasized that effective, responsive, and inclusive governance hinges on this intersection, as it enables a collaborative framework essential for driving sustainable development.

She further advocated for a shared vision aligned with civil service, political goals, and academic advancements. To solidify this partnership, Walson-Jack recommended establishing institutionalized platforms for regular dialogue, fostering a culture of innovation in governance, and maintaining transparent frameworks to harmonize short-term political priorities with long-term research objectives.

In addition to proposing ethical standards and clear communication channels, she urged increased funding for research and policy implementation, underscoring the need for dedicated resources to sustain such collaborative efforts.

Expressing gratitude to the University of Ibadan (UI), she commended the institution’s legacy of excellence since its founding in 1948, noting its contributions to education and research. She emphasized that UI’s achievements in academia and innovation exemplify its commitment to Nigeria’s development trajectory, serving as a role model in higher education and governance.

In his welcome address, Vice-Chancellor of UI, Professor Kayode Adebowale, acknowledged Walson-Jack’s dedication to effective policy implementation, lauding her as an influential leader in civil service. He affirmed that collaboration among these governance pillars is instrumental in driving societal transformation and building an inclusive governance model.

Professor Peter Olapegba, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and Chairman of the UI@75 Anniversary Committee, praised Walson-Jack’s tireless commitment to public service, noting her impact and integrity as a dedicated civil servant. He added that the lecture aligns with UI’s mission to transform society through research, creativity, and the strategic partnerships that the university has long championed.
