Over 12,000 Teachers Take Professional Qualifying Exams Nationwide: TRCN

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has reported that a total of 12,539 teachers participated in the May session of the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) held from Thursday to Saturday.

The PQE, conducted by TRCN, serves as a benchmark to assess the professional competence of teachers across the country.

Dr. Jacinta Ezeahurukwe, Director of Certification and Licensing at TRCN, highlighted the significance of the examination in ensuring that only qualified teachers remain in classrooms nationwide. She emphasized that the impact of the PQE has been recognized both nationally and internationally.

Since the enforcement of the policy "no PQE, no staying in the classroom" in 2019, an increasing number of teachers have sought to obtain their PQE certification, reflecting the growing recognition of the teaching profession's importance.

According to Ms. Ezeahurukwe, the PQE sets a standard for foundational knowledge that teachers must possess, aligning with professional teaching standards. Notably, the examination has gained international recognition, with countries such as the UK granting Nigerian teachers the opportunity to apply for qualifying teacher status.

Ms. Ezeahurukwe underscored the importance of TRCN certification, noting that virtually every school in Nigeria requires teachers to possess TRCN certification and licensing. TRCN is committed to ensuring that every state and educational institution, from primary to tertiary levels, employs qualified teachers.

The examination process has been integrated into the educational system, with graduating education students registering for the PQE at the point of graduation. This proactive approach ensures that graduating students are equipped with the necessary qualifications to enter the teaching profession seamlessly.

One of the participating teachers, Agnes Agbo from Veritas University, expressed her motivation for taking part in the examination, citing a desire to continue in the teaching profession and to have opportunities for international mobility. Despite initial challenges, she described the examination process as successful, thanks to the swift response of the monitoring team.
