Student Commits Suicide After Boyfriend Ends Relationship in Adamawa

In a tragic incident, a female student identified as Jamima Shetima Balami has reportedly committed suicide by consuming a substance believed to be rat poison in Adamawa State. The 24-year-old National Diploma II student of the Department of Mass Communication at the Federal Polytechnic Mubi in Adamawa State took her own life at her residence in Vinikilang, also known as Hayin Gada, in the Girei local government area of the state.
According to reports, Balami was undergoing Industrial Training (IT) at the Adamawa Television (ATV) station in Yola at the time of her death. The circumstances leading to her suicide are linked to the termination of her relationship with her boyfriend, purportedly a lecturer at Modibbo Adama University (MAU) in Yola. Allegedly, her boyfriend ended their relationship, prompting Balami to take her own life out of despair.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, confirmed the incident and stated that the matter was reported to the police by the father of the deceased. Nguroje disclosed that the police received conflicting versions of the events surrounding Balami's death and assured the public that investigations are underway to ascertain the true cause of her demise.
The tragic incident underscores the need for mental health awareness and support systems, particularly among students and young adults facing relationship challenges and emotional distress.
