Abia State Government Cracks Down on School Fee Extortion and Unauthorized Social Events
Abia State government intensifies efforts to curb school fee extortion and unauthorized events, warning of strict measures against offenders.
The Abia State government has intensified its efforts to curb the alleged extortion of fees by some Principals and Head Teachers from students preparing for examinations. Expressing concern over reports of such malpractice, the government has urged parents and students to report any instances to the Ministry of Education.
Commissioner for Education, Professor Uche Eme Uche, emphasized the government's commitment to addressing the issue, stating that it had not been previously aware of such activities. Prof. Uche warned that severe measures would be taken against any individuals caught engaging in this practice.

In addition to addressing fee extortion, the government has also taken a stand against the unauthorized renting out of school premises for social events, which it deems a significant distraction to learning. Prof. Uche reiterated the directive for Principals and Head Teachers to refrain from allowing such events during weekdays.
Furthermore, the government revealed ongoing renovations in selected model schools across the state and urged strict compliance with guidelines to maintain educational standards. Prof. Uche issued a stern warning to Principals of private schools that had been shut down for failing to meet standards, cautioning against reopening without fulfilling the necessary requirements.

Regarding salary issues faced by primary school teachers from the previous administration, assurances were given that these concerns would soon be addressed. Additionally, the government disclosed plans for a needs assessment to facilitate the employment of science teachers and other essential subjects in state schools.
This crackdown echoes similar actions taken by other states, such as Delta, which recently urged school principals and head teachers to adhere strictly to approved levies and avoid imposing excessive fees on students.
